Recycle!

Internet Information Resource for Recycling and Environmental Issuses

for the town of Columbia, MO and the surrounding Boone County

Project backgroud and goals

Goal of this project is to use the digital media World Wide Web to provice information about recycling facilities and other environmental issues to the public. Focus of this project is the local community of Columbia, Missouri and Boone County.
This project will inform citizens about opportunities to take part in a responsible way of dealing with their waste materials.

The project was developed at the Digital Missourian, the online venture of one of Columbia's local newspapers, the 'Columbia Missourian' in the context of the New Media class.
Placing information about this topic at public media is one of the necessities for changing people's attitude towards the covered topics.

As a side effect, this project gives the opportunity to explore the University of Missouri-Columbia's multimedia equipment and to find out about the limitations in today's electronic publishing on World Wide Web for a heterogenously structured and computer-supported audience.

Topics to cover

The project will gather and present information about:

Sources of Information

Information about the topics will be obtained from the town of Columbia, from environmental groups like the 'Environmental Action' Students Organization, from the Media, Library and the Internet.
Information about the multimedia production facilities on the MU Campus will be reserached and used within the limits of access policies, harddisk space and copyright restrictions of the used materials as well as under considerations of capacity of data connections and assumptions of the average reader's multimedia equipment (which means it is completely useless to produce a 5-minute video clip with stereo sound because not even MU has the computer to replay it).

And finally, here you can have a look at the project or what is already made of it.

Read the final project report (it might look odd but it was translated from LaTeX by software).

[Note as of January 19, 1996: the project is finished and you will see the final state. All the files have been handed over to the Digital Missourian with permission to use them on their webserver.]
