A project of this size involving reporting, video and sound processing, graphics design, research and software/hardware installation should be made by a project team. At least one person with detailed computer and operating system knowledge is necessary in a situation where no completely installed and working multimedia lab is available. A person familiar with graphics design, scanning, image manipulation and layout is essential. If video or sound are to be included, specialists in these fields are required unless there is a place with experts that help out.
When working in a project group it is definitly helpful do develop some project standards for production. This means more that setting up a style guide. Topics as used software, color-depth of images, file format of images, link philosophy, file sharing between group members and many more need to be defined to avoid accidentally modified files, ambigious job specifications and a waste of resources.
Using a digital camera would improve the photo production dramatically. I made slides with a 35mm camera, developed them at the photo department and queued up for the scanner in the newsroom. This is too costly in time to be an option for producing multimedia.
The availability of multimedia workstations with huge memory and a gigabyte of disk space would be helpful, as always in multimedia related businesses. All software should be in one location on networked computers.
The location of a World Wide Web related project is worth consideration. Problems I encountered during development of my image maps at the Physics Lab WWW Server were unexpected but not unusual: the lab's SGI machines are used for graphics design and raytracing. The used package named Softimage starts programs on several of the workstations. One of these is the Phlab web server, on which Softimage consumes huge amounts of memory, and so sometimes all I received when accessing the project documents was a message telling me that the machine can't execute the web server or my server scripts due to memory shortage or due to the maximum number of programs that can run on the machine was reached. A server used for development should be a dedicated machine or the development workstation.
