To obtain the necessary infomation for the project, I contacted Residential Services, the Recycling Volunteer Program, Civic Recycling, the Public Works Department and the Columbia landfill.
I attended a composting class, put up and maintained a free composter and participated in curbside recycling to test what I was going to write about.
Originally, I wanted to produce a video about Columbia's landfill, and to put up recorded voice of one of the compost volunteers explaining the different types of composters presented in the project. But in addition to designing graphics, making photographs, installing software, researching computer labs, reading brochures and trying to get statistics about recycling from both the City of Columbia and Civic Recycling, I soon cancelled the video and audio plans realizing there would be no time to edit the recordings.
Further plans, like presenting figures about landwill growth, percentage of recyclable materials in household waste and researching what happens to the recycleable materials collected by Columbia and Civic Recycling did not work out well because the persons responsible at both organizations failed to provide the information and therefore I skipped these topics. I suppose this was caused by the public criticism of the delay in publishing the long awaited blue bag figures, the decline in Columbia's recycling volume and related topics.
