The Migration Procedure

The migration procedure consists of the four main steps listed below:

  1. Request migration permission and transfer Task State Segment and Logical Disk Table
  2. Transfer the logical machine's memory space
  3. Transfer the logical machine's video frame buffer
  4. Transfer the ILMC message buffer

The actual protocol to request and execute a migration involves a variety of actions including suspension of the logical machine that is to be migrated, permission negotiations, logical machine creation on the destination host and more. For a detailed list see figure 8 on page 326 in [1].
