iOS 4.0 iPhone 3G Wifi-Problems
Latest update: 2010/06/29
Conclusion:
After all the testing I have done on the device and having the 3G3 countertest, I'll assume that there is a bug in the baseband of iOS4 for the 3G, which handles wifi connection and/or dhcp handshake. If that bug is triggered the 3G4 can not anymore connected to any wifi network.
Setup:
- AEBS — Apple Extreme Base Station
- 3G4 — iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 (8A293) Baseband 05.13.04, Model MB497DN
- 3G3 — iPhone 3G with iPhone OS 3.1.3 (7E18) Baseband 05.12.01, Model MB497DN
- MBP — MacBookPro

As developer I installed the golden master on my 3G4. Update worked and was usuable.
- 2010/06/25 - 2010/06/27 Wifi problem started
I was unable to get into my home wifi network anymore on 3G4. The other 3G3 worked with out any problems, also the MBP was working like a charm.
First I rebooted the AEBS, but the issue was not resolved. I am always able to see the surrounding wifi stations in the wifi settings. Also I can see these with the Wifi Tracker App. Whenever I try to enter one of the wifi networks I get the error message alert:
During all the tests I did, the MBP and 3G3 had NO problems to get into the network.
So here is what I did so far:
- Reboot AEBS
- No solution.
- Reboot 3G4
- No solution.
- Airplane mode ON and OFF on 3G4
- No solution.
- Forget this network in the wifi settings on 3G4
- No solution. But now I'm asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly still gets me to the error message.
- Reset the network settings on the 3G4
- No solution. Still asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly and gets me to the error message.
- Change the network name on AEBS
- No solution. Still asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly and gets me to the error message.
- Change to OPEN (aka no encryption) AEBS
- No solution. Still gets me to the error message.
- Change to WEP (aka weak encryption) AEBS
- No solution. Still asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly and gets me to the error message.
- Change to WPA AEBS
- No solution. Still asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly and gets me to the error message.
- Change to WPA2 AEBS
- No solution. Still asked to enter the passphrase, entering it correctly and gets me to the error message.
- Downgrade to 3.1.3 on the 3G4
- No solution. The downgrade was done according according to the script at Techlifezone – Downgrading iPhone OS 4.0 after a failed install.
Note: The Baseband was NOT downgraded.

- We resetted the iPhone via DFU mode again and flashed the iOS4. Problems still there. Genius said, on base of his experience, that this is a hardware issue. I got a real good offer to exchange the hardware, which I did accept.
