Lothar's Pointers to Thread Programming

Don't expect anything fancy here. This page is put together from some research results concerning a class prjoject involving thread programming with Posix threads.

Since we do Computer Science, here is what we eggheads need:

This text lists some on-line resources to read into the use and the function of threads, multithreaded programming and concurrency issues with the focus on pthreads, the Posix threads implementation supported by IBM, Sun, DEC and other producers of Posix Unix operating systems.

There is a free pthreads implementation available which is said to work with LINUX, but I had no chance to test that so far.

Some pointers to documentation

• An Introduction to Programming with Threads by Andrew D. Birrell, Digital Equipment (compressed postscript file)
• SunSoft threads page at Sun Microsystems
• Book: Threads Primer - a guide to multithreaded programming. By Lewis/Berg. This is just a book description, not its content.
• IBM's Developer Support Server:
  This server sends documents with a server script. The documents are not adressable via URL. The wat to get them is to follow the link below and query the search menu for 'thread'. The titles of the two most interesting documents are listed below. But at this site, you can find more interesting things ...
  1. Go to IBM's developer support server
  2. Select the search menu
  3. Enter 'thread' as a keyword
  4. The search result should among others display these two documents:
     • Threads Programming in AIX Version 4
     • Introduction to Multithreaded Programming
• Check Christopher Provenzano's Pthreads page including FAQ, current Posix issues, supported operating systems, e-mail and news archive etc...
• See some pthreads manpages if you're in the mood to do so.
• And don't forgent to check comp.programmig.threads (that's one of these potentially porn-ladden, indecent, lucious, dirty, immoral Usenet Newsgroups, you know) after you read all the stuff above.
